Aircraft Identifications

Despite a lack of "Official Approval", beginning in the First World War, British crewmen began assigning epithets to their airplanes. This eventually succeeded to such an extent that it became standard for that service.
The U.S. Army and Navy continued their unique designation systems even as popular names began to be acquired by certain airplanes. Eventually a uniform identification system was adopted, and official "nicknames" were assigned.
This document attempts to align the names and designations borne by SOME aircraft that have been in operational service. In most cases the original Airforce/Navy identifications are called out. In a few cases the newer uniform Airforce/Navy system will have been used.
